Discover the Centre and Enjoy a Walk Through One of Bahrain’s Most Charming Heritage Neighborhoods.
In the heart of Muharraq, amidst narrow alleys and historic houses steeped in memories and rich history, lies the Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Center for Culture and Research. This cultural, artistic, and tourist attraction is located in one of Muharraq’s oldest neighborhoods. The centre itself has led a project to restore the neighbourhood’s buildings, preserving their traditional architectural character. Visiting this area feels like stepping back in time to a world brimming with beauty, history, and culture, with the Shaikh Ebrahim Center at its core. The neighbourhood features a collection of heritage houses, a mosque, and a traditional café, making it a valuable cultural experience for those exploring the centre. Inspired by the cultural legacy of Shaikh Ebrahim, known as the "Sheikh of Enlightenment," who once hosted discussions in his majlis in the center of Muharraq, the centre continues his mission with a modern institutional approach. It promotes culture, arts, literature, and music through seasonal events that attract local, regional, and international audiences. The centre includes a library and a multi-purpose hall and organises diverse art and cultural events year-round, along with heritage houses that tell Bahrain’s cultural and artistic stories.

What to Expect
A Blend of Culture and Place
The centre was established on the grounds of Shaikh Ebrahim’s majlis, where he gathered intellectuals until his passing in 1933. The location itself symbolises the connection between culture, people, history, and place, reflecting one of the centre’s core messages. Just as the Shaikh’s majlis transformed into a modern cultural hub, the heritage homes of other prominent intellectuals are being restored as cultural centres that honour their contributions while preserving the traditional architecture of their times.
Restoration to Preserve History
The centre has restored 28 heritage projects across Muharraq, Manama, and Al-Malikiyah, many of which were once home to cultural icons. Among them is the Abdullah Al Zayed House for Bahraini Press Heritage, the former residence of Al Zayed, a pioneer of journalism in Bahrain. Also restored is the House of Poetry, once the home of renowned poet Ibrahim Al Arrayed, and the Mohammed Bin Faris House, a tribute to one of the Gulf's most influential musicians.
A Year-Round Cultural Beacon
Throughout the year, the centre hosts a variety of cultural events and activities, locally, regionally, and globally. In addition to its many local activities, it has welcomed over 500 notable figures in literature, music, philosophy, and humanities, celebrating culture in all its forms.
