Are you ready to explore the fascinating depths of the Arabian Gulf? Scuba diving in Bahrain is not just an adventure; it’s a journey into a vibrant underwater world that is rich in marine life, history, and ecological significance. With its warm waters, stunning coral reefs, and diverse marine ecosystems, Bahrain is a great destination for divers of all levels.

Bahrain’s unique geographical position offers a remarkable diving experience. The Arabian Gulf is home to over 30 species of sharks, 16 of which are endangered, making it a critical area for marine conservation. Additionally, the dugong population here is the second largest in the world, with estimates ranging from 5,800 to 7,300 individuals as of 2022. This rich biodiversity is a testament to Bahrain’s commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.

Bahrain has several stunning dive sites to explore. Abulthama is one of the most popular, it is located on the far north of Bahrain and boasts crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral and fascinating macro life, including stunning nudibranchs and anemone carpets. There is also an old wooden wreck, which sank with a rather unusual cargo of cement and toilet seats, which has become a thriving habitat for a variety of fish.

With a rich heritage of pearling, Bahrain’s pearling grounds in Abu Amama and Sh’tayya are also a must visit. Experience the thrill of diving for pearls, trying your luck at unearthing these local gems! The best part? You can keep what you find!

For the safety of our visitors, to dive in Bahrain’s turquoise waters, you must have a dive certification from a recognised training facility. If you’re new to diving, obtaining a certification in Bahrain is easy! The PADI Open Water Diver Course typically takes four days, including theory, pool training and two days of open water dives guided by qualified instructors. It is fun and you will finish with a world recognised dive certification.

Bahrain’s underwater world is waiting for you to explore its vibrant marine life, stunning coral reefs, and rich history. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a chance to connect with nature, scuba diving in Bahrain promises an unforgettable experience.

To dive with a reputable operator in Bahrain, you’ll need:

  • Certification: A valid diving certification (PADI, SSI, or equivalent) is required for most dive trips. Beginners can enrol in courses offered by local dive centres. Age restrictions apply, it is usually 15 years but do check with your operator. Note that to gain certification, you must be able to complete a 200-metre pool swim without touching the sides, and tread water for 10 minutes keeping your head out of the water.
  • Gear: Most dive operators provide rental equipment, but if you have your own, feel free to bring it along!
  • Health and Safety: A medical statement may be required to ensure you’re fit to dive so check with your operator. It’s also wise to wear a rash guard during certain times of the year to protect against minor jellyfish stings.
  • Booking: Reserve your spot in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure you don’t miss out on the incredible diving experiences Bahrain has to offer.
