A Glimpse into Bahrain’s History and the Ruling Family
Sheikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al-Fateh Fort, commonly known as Riffa Fort, is one of Bahrain’s historical landmarks and a popular destination for history, architecture, and desert environment enthusiasts. The fort overlooks a valley called Wadi Al-Hunainiyah, famous for the sweetness of its well water, which was once a main water source for nearby residents, transported by a “saqqay” who would draw water from the well and distribute it.
What to Expect
Sheikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al-Fateh, the second ruler of Bahrain from the Al Khalifa family, built Riffa Fort in 1812 in West Riffa on the remnants of an older fort. It represents an important part of Bahrain and the ruling family’s history, having served as both a defensive and residential structure. The fort includes several rooms, a prayer area, a kitchen, and a storage area.
A modern section within the fort displays artefacts related to the royal family, including swords, some over 140 years old, as well as a valuable collection of jewellery, daggers, hunting tools, and falconry equipment.
