Built in 1921, this heritage home retells the story of Bahrain’s rich pearl diving past.
In the heart of Manama lies a house unlike any other, narrating the story of Bahrain’s capital and its pearl trade. This is the house of pearl merchant Haj Mohammed bin Salman bin Khalaf (1978-1898). Built in 1921, the house was restored and reopened in 2013 and stands as a unique example of traditional Bahraini homes, showcasing intricate designs, carved wooden doors and windows, and antique furnishings. Within its walls, it preserves memories of Manama’s neighbourhoods, residents, and the pearl trade, forming an open museum that offers a glimpse into Bahrain’s history through its architecture, people, and heritage. The house exhibits some of bin Khalaf’s personal belongings, items related to the pearl trade, and a collection of photos featuring him and other prominent figures from Manama. Bait Khalaf is located in central Manama.
