If you want to delve into traditional Bahraini houses and their original furnishings, Al Jasra House, built in 1907, offers a unique experience. This historic home is where the late Amir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, born in 1933 and passed away in 1999, was born. Unlike other traditional tourist houses, Al Jasra House retains authentic furnishings and household items from the past. Today, the house also serves as a hub for traditional crafts like embroidery, pottery, and basket weaving, making it a valuable cultural attraction where visitors can experience both the architectural style of old Bahraini homes and traditional craftsmanship.
What to Expect
A Model of Traditional Architecture
The house exemplifies old, rural architecture, with a large courtyard featuring a central tree surrounded by several small rooms, all set within a beautiful green space. The rooms are adorned with unique architectural touches, such as intricately-carved wooden doors and windows, as well as small built-in shelves known locally as rawzanat, which are decorated with colorful glass bottles for added charm. The house also contains traditional wooden chests for storing clothes, wall-mounted mirrors, cabinets, antique decor, and water jars.
The House’s Rooms
Al Jasra House includes various rooms, some designated for sitting and others for sleeping, as well as a kitchen and a “Madbasa” for date molasses production. The sitting room, though small, boasts the traditional Bahraini seating area with embroidered cushions and floor seating called “Masanid” and “Dawashiq”, along with rawzanat shelves. Traditional coffee pots (Dallahs) sit at the center of the room. The bedroom features a large bed and a cozy sitting area, while the kitchen houses old cooking utensils, pots of various sizes, baskets, and other traditional kitchen items. Notably, the “Madbasa” is used to process dates into molasses, a popular ingredient in local dishes and sweets.
A visit to Al Jasra House is a wonderful opportunity to explore the essence of old Bahraini homes and learn about traditional crafts like embroidery, pottery, and basket weaving, which the house now showcases.
