Start your day by fuelling up with a delicious traditional Bahraini breakfast at Saffron by Jena. Nestled in the heart of the old Muharraq city, this restaurant offers a delightful introduction to local favourites like shakshuka (a savory dish of eggs and crushed tomatoes) and balaleet (sweet, cardamom-infused vermicelli noodles topped with an omelette). The venue itself is a restored historical site, featuring preserved old pipes beneath a glass floor, providing a unique dining experience. Its central location in the Muharraq Souq makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the rich heritage of the area.

Exploring Muharraq’s Heritage

Muharraq
approximately 2 hours

After breakfast, take a leisurely stroll through the charming streets of Muharraq, where you’ll find a series of beautiful heritage houses. These houses were restored by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) to preserve the cultural significance of Muharraq as the epicentre of Bahrain’s flourishing pearling trade during the 1850s to 1930s. Notable sites include the Sheikh Ebrahim Lecture Hall, Iqra Children’s Library, and Nukhida House, each showcasing Bahrain’s cultural legacy. Don’t miss the Shaikh Isa bin Ali House, a stunning example of Gulf Islamic architecture, renowned for its intricate wooden doors and serene courtyards. Be sure to visit the Sheikh Ebrahim Bin Mohamed Al Khalifa Centre for Culture and Research, which offers insights into Bahrain’s traditions, from embroidery at Kurar House to the pearling legacy at Bin Matar House, highlighting the kingdom’s commitment to preserving its history and architecture. Additionally, if time permits, visiting the UNESCO site, The Pearling Path located within the same area, offers a remarkable glimpse into this rich history and is highly recommended.

Sweet Indulgence

No visit to Bahrain is complete without trying the traditional Bahraini sweet, Halwa. Just a short walk from the old souq, you’ll find many charming traditional sweet shops where you can indulge in this delightful treat, often served with Arabic coffee known as Ghawa. Grab some Halwa and perhaps a few of the region’s famous dates (which the shops will gladly pack for your journey) before crossing the bridge into Manama, Bahrain’s vibrant capital.
